WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
All managers, project managers and team leaders of both small and large established companies, including those who believe have good problem-solving skills. We encourage organizations to send teams to this workshop.
Managers need a new set of skills to deal with a rapidly changing environment that requires them to identify and tackle new problems or new ways of solving existing ones. To be competitive and survive we have to become creative more than ever. Learning the way that creative people look at problems and constraints as opportunities, not as threats is the focus of the design thinking approach.
The purpose of this workshop is to enable participants to learn what innovation really is and how it is used to develop new products, services and business models, or simply for day-to-day innovation. We will use the experiential learning approach based on the most recent techniques and frameworks: design thinking.
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Take away key steps & processes of Design Thinking and adapt them into their daily routines
- Identify situations in which the traditional problem-solving way cannot be applied
- Approach problem-solving more creatively
- Develop innovative products that are compelling and widely adopted by users
- Use prototypes to develop products, strategies or business models
- Continuously improve products and strategies through user feedback
SECTION 1: Leveraging unexploited creativity to improve innovative skills
Introduction to innovation to prepare ourselves to think outside of our mental paradigms and begin to see reality with fresh eyes, as well as, envision a whole new world of possibilities.
SECTION 2: Becoming an Innovator- Idea generation
The goal is to introduce you to a new methodology that comes naturally to most designers and creative minds. This methodology consists of experiencing things from the user’s perspective, visualizing ideas, understanding the customer/user and iterating ideas rapidly.
SECTION 3: Becoming an Innovator- Coming up with the solution
After presenting the results of the problem understanding exercise, we will practice the problem solving part of the exercise. The goal now is to apply the Design Thinking approach to generate solutions to the identified problems. We will present the new products and services that we developed.
SECTION 4: Take the solution to the market with the right business model
Having a new product or a service is not sufficient – we need to think about the business model that brings it to the market.
We will learn and practice how to innovate in the business model to deliver the new product/service to the market.
SECTION 5: Results and next steps
We will wrap up the two-day course by taking the learnings from the classroom to the office. We will end the day by group discussion/ exercise on how to apply the design thinking and business model canvasing on every-day problems in the organization.
Ivanka Visnjic is an Assistant Professor of Innovation at ESADE Business School and a Research Sponsor at Cambridge Service Alliance, University of Cambridge. Before joining ESADE, Ivanka worked at a consulting firm McKinsey & Co and completed a PhD at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium. Her research, consulting and speaking activities are focused on business model innovation of established companies, such as shift to services and solution business models, platform business models and disruptive business models. She has been working closely with top management of a number of global companies, such as Atlas Copco, BAE Systems, Caterpillar, GEA, IBM, Pearson and Zoetis. She designed and thought courses in the areas of creativity and innovation, innovation & R&D management, design thinking, business model innovation and service innovation.
Ivanka has taught in MBA and Executive Programs with participants from all around the globe and from sectors such as pharmaceutical, industrial and financial services. Ivanka has received IBM Faculty Award as well as scholarships and awards from various academic institutions. Her research has been published in prestigious academic journals, California Management Review, Journal of Operations Management and Journal of Product Innovation Management. She regularly presents at leading international conferences and reviews for several journals. Ivanka speaks fluently English, Serbian and Croatian and has a conversation ability in French, Italian and Spanish.
